SCHAL SICK BRASS BAND
The opening day will feature a concert by the Cologne-based world music group Schal Sick Brass Band whose tunes span a wide variety of music traditions, from Afrobeat to Balkan music and jazz. During the Mela, they will stage two gigs, the festival opening concert on Friday, April 13 (Open Air Stage, 7.30pm) and another show on Saturday, April 14 (Open Air Stage, 8pm), and three events for kids: a musical theatre performance that will be held on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 (at the Conference Pavilion, at 10am, on both days) as well as a workshop for children, also on Sunday, April 15 (Conference Pavilion, 2pm).

PHOTO EXHIBITION

Photographer and travel writer Aneesh Bhasin will display a collection of images of Berlin and Mumbai that brings out the commonalities and contrasts between the two cities. The exhibition, which will be mounted on the fencing and walls of the festival venue, will include a few “mash-up” cityscapes in which pictures from both places are combined to create a seamless single image. From Saturday, April 14 to Sunday, April 22, from 10am to 10pm.

GUIDED MELA TOUR

German architect and installation artist Markus Heinsdorff will conduct a guided tour of the mela, the centerpiece of which is a set of multi-purpose gemstone-shaped pavilions that he designed to “reflect the symbiosis of Indian design and German innovation”. Starting from the Greenfield, on Saturday, April 14, at 4pm, and on Wednesday, April 18, at 5pm.

PARADA NARRNIA
Berlin-based experimental street theatre company Grotest Maru will stage a performance of their production Parada Narrnia. The company describes the half-hour performance, which features stilt walkers and characters such as the big white bird, the magic gardener, the sad prince and unicorn princess, as a “fairy tale” parade. You can watch Parada Narrnia at the Greenfield on Saturday, April 14 (6.30pm and 7.30pm) and on Sunday, April 15 (6.30pm and 7.30pm).

AKIM WALTA
German rapper and breakdancer Akim Walta, who is described as Germany’s “hip hop ambassador” will helm a b-boying performance that will also feature his countryman and graffiti artist Loomit, on Sunday April 15, from 8pm, at the Open Air Theatre.

Other events that you might want to sign up for include the introductory German “teaser” class at the Goethe studio (on Saturday, April 14 at 3pm, and Sunday, April 15 at 2.30pm); and the Foosball tournament that will be held in front of the Open Air Stage, from 4pm, on Saturday, April 14.
