Powai Lake In Mumbai The Powai is a huge artificial lake that is situated in the Northern suburbs of Mumbai. It was after the name of the lake that the suburb of Mumbai is named.towards the west of the Indian Institute of Technology, the premier institute of Science and Technology. The lake, built by the British in 1890, adds to the charm of the Bombay city of India. It owes it name to Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate, belonging to a Parsi merchant. Just 25 km from Central Mumbai, Powai Lake is a perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. However, the serene and pleasant ambience of the place attracts a lot of tourists throughout the year. It also serves as a great picnic spot for the people to wander lazily around its bank and enjoy the bliss of solitude. The natural beauty of the place is simply enthralling and leaves you spell bound. Powai Lake is easily approachable from King's Circle, Sion and Kurla as well as from Santa Cruz and Andheri. A delightful car drive can be enjoyed when traveling by car. The lake is a stretch of water just by the side of a motorable road. During the British Rule the authorities intended to augment the water supply to Bombay City by creating a lake from the rivulet and this was achieved in the year 1891 by the construction of two stone barrages approximately 10 meters high across the two hillocks. Thus a man made water body was created that spread across an area of 370 acres or 2.10 sq. kms with its depth varying from 10 meters to 40 meters at its deepest. Due to the an excessive average rainfall of about 2540 mm at the place the lake overflows for more than 60 days in a year. The lake, which was built at a cost of approximately 6.5 lakh rupees, was named as the ‘Powai Lake’, after Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate. Though the lake water is now unfit for drinking, its beautiful and serene surroundings continue to attract visitors
Vihar Lake In Mumbai Vihar Lake brags of being the largest of all the three lakes of Mumbai. Similar to Tulsi Lake, this lake too shares the site of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is a quiet stretch of water, about 27 miles from the center of Bombay. It is regarded as the major water resource for Mumbai. Most of the regions in the South Mumbai get water supply because of this lake only. This beautiful lake attracts a lot of tourists and is also a favorite place to hangout in the city of Mumbai. This lake is precisely located in the Borivali National Park in Mumbai. This park is present in the Northern Mumbai. Vihar Lake, Mumbai is sandwiched between the Tulsa Lake and Poway Lake . These lakes are also present in the same vicinity of the Borivali National Park. This lake is feeded by the Powai-Kanheri hill ranges. This hilly range serves as the catchment area for rainwater. This lake serves most of the water requirements of the city and gives a lot of relief to other water resources, which are diverted or other uses. However, the overflow limit of this lake has been determined to be 80.42 meters. This unruffled place also has a sunset point, which offers a spectacular view of the sun at dusk. Mountains on one side and national park on the other make this lake a sought-after destination. On its northern banks, there is a water treatment plant that has water pipelines running along the eastern fringe of the lake. This beautiful lake attracts a lot of tourists and is also a favorite place to hangout in the city of Mumbai.owever, since 1995, the access has been curtailed to quite an extent. You can catch a glimpse of the Vihar Lake in many Bollywood movies, for which it is one of the most popular shooting locations. The lake is visited, in large numbers, by the local people as well as the tourists coming to the Mumbai city. It has become a very famous venue for picnics, because of its beautiful surroundings. The serenity of the Vihar Lake provides the best relief from the mundane and hectic city life.
Tulsi Lake In Mumbai Tulsi Lake is a serene lagoon that offers a nice place to the people away from the furore of city. It happens to be the second largest lake of Mumbai that is clean enough to provide drinking water to the Bollywood city of India. Located at a distance of 32 km in the north of Bombay, Tulsi Lake is to be found within the fringe of the famous Sanjay Gandhi National Park.Tulsi lake was built after Vihar Lake as city needed more water supply, This Lake is located Near borivali National park and a person can reach this place by Car or Bus with travel distance about 25 to 27 kilometers towards North Suburb. Being sited in the national park, the way to the lake is covered with trees, plants and shrubs. It is not open to the general public and one needs to take permission from the park authorities to visit the lake. One needs to be careful because it is said that fresh water crocodiles inhabit the lake. To put succinctly, Tulsi Lake is a beautiful place, clear of chaotic city life, where water and lush greenery make the ideal respite for any solitude seeker. The idea to create this lake was conceived in 1872 and accomplished by 1897. 139.17 metres is its highest overflow level, recorded at the meter. This fresh water lake primarily fulfills the water requirement of the southern part of Mumbai. Mumbai’s second largest lake is Tulsi Lake. It is one of the lake which supplies Drinking water to the Mumbai City. Its overflow level is measured at 139.17 metres. The Powai-Kanheri hill ranges serve as the catchment area for rain water which feeds the lake. It meets part of the city’s water requirement, especially to the South Mumbai region

7th Billion baby will be born today in UP
Planet’s seven billionth human is due to be born on October 31 somewhere in Uttar Pradesh.
Confusion has arisen as some organisations pin-pointed Pinky Pawar of Baghpat district just adjoining the National capital as the mother of the 7th billion child while others are claiming that it will be born at a village near Lucknow.
Earlier, United Nations Population Fund had claimed that a village in Uttar Pradesh is likely to hog the limelight for this population landmark as it has the highest birth rate in the world.
Though the UN agency has said it cannot pinpoint ”the exact moment when or the exact place where that child will be born”, but organisations working on populations have already started selecting places for the grand birth in UP.
Uttar Pradesh also has the highest birth rate and fertility rate among all Indian states.
In 1999, the UN named a Bosnian son of refugee parents the world’s sixth billionth person, but it has no such plan to name anyone this time.
It has, however, launched a global campaign called ‘7 Billion Actions’ asking individuals, organisations and corporations to share their stories of how the world of seven billion people can be a better place for all to live.
Plan, a U K-based children’s welfare non-profit organisation, has begun the countdown for a birth of a girl in a village near Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
The organisation has identified Mal, a village in mango belt of Malihabad, near the state capital for the occasion.
An official of Plan India revealed that the organisation has selected seven expectant mothers from a village, about 20 km away from Lucknow, who are expected to give birth in the early hours of Monday at a community health centre.
”We are expecting a girl child would born which will be the seven billionth child,” the official hinted.
Though the organisation would be celebrating the day by giving certificates to all the newly born babies but the UP government health department authorities told UNI here on Saturday that they are unaware about the birth of the 7th billion child in the state.
Some other social organisations have said that one Pinky Pawar(25) is due to give birth to the 7th billion child in Baghpat district of UP.
Mediapersons have already reached Sunhaida village in Baghpat while the family members are rejoicing the moment.
Pinky hoped that her firstborn child would be named Samrat if it is a boy and Sneha if she gives birth to a girl.
The total fertility rate – the number of children a woman has in her lifetime, which should ideally be 2.1 to keep the population where it is – is 2.6, down from 3.2 in 1998 in the country.

England Beat India By 6 Wkts In T20
Kolkata, Oct 29 :It took a while coming, maybe too long. But victory, whenever it comes, however it comes, is always sweet. England finally managed to get a win — their first in India since 2006 — and it was Kevin Pietersen who powered them to a six-wicket triumph with eight balls to spare in the Twenty20 match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Kevin Pietersen struck a rollicking 53 as England salvaged some pride on an otherwise dismal Indian tour with a comprehensive six-wicket victory over the hosts in the lone Twenty20 International here today.
Pietersen, who missed the visitors’ last ODI here because of a fractured left thumb, returned in style with a match-winning knock that came off 39 balls as England chased down India’s modest 121-run target with eight balls to spare.
After being dropped on one by Suresh Raina, Pietersen hit five boundaries and three sixes en route his quickfire innings as the reigning T20 champions proved their supremacy in the shortest format of the game.
India had won the toss and elected to bat. Suresh Raina, 39 off 29 balls, was the only Indian batsman who ever really got going. There were times, however, when it looked like India would get to at least 150. India were chugging along and had reached 66-3 after 10.4 overs when they lost three wickets in quick succession.
The partnership between Raina and Tiwary was building on when Samit Patel broke the stand by removing Tiwary. Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja followed into the hut and India were suddenly forced back into defensive mode.
They never recovered despite Dhoni trying his hardest to salvage the situation.

Banganga in Mumbai
A sacred tank surrounded by four hundred-year-old temples and modern skyscrapers. Nowhere are Mumbai's paradoxes more evident than at Banganga. Part of an ancient temple complex, the water in this tank is believed to come from the Holy Ganges. It sprung forth when Rama, the exiled hero of the epic Ramayana stopped at the spot five thousand years ago, in search of his kidnapped wife Sita. Overcome with fatigue and thirst, he asked his brother Laxman to bring him some water. Laxman instantly shot an arrow into the ground, and water gushed forth from the Ganga, over a thousand miles away. Although the story is the stuff of legend, the tank has always been sacred. On pious occasions, thousands turn up to take a ritual dip in its mossy waters, and offer flowers at the ancient Banganga Temples
n more recent history, a group of resident have been organizing the 'Banganga Festival' – a cultural festival of Indian classical music. By all accounts it is a great experience to listen to live music out in the open, with the lights reflecting on the water. But many in Mumbai come to Banganga just to observe a gentle, traditional way of life and enjoy the quiet. A supreme luxury in Mumbai!
Banganga, Mumbai is part of the Walkeshwar Temple Complex. It was built during the 12 th century by the Silhara dynasty. Rama Kamath gave a donation for rebuilding the tank in 1715. The main temple is at present a structure of reinforced concrete. The Banganga tank is fed by a spring and during each February it is cleaned and spruced up for the yearly Banganga Hindustani classical music festival. This is a major cultural event in the city. Although it is placed only a few dozen meters from the sea, still it has fresh water. The tank is a rectangular pool structure, encircled by steps on all four sides. Near the entrance are two pillars in which oil lamps called diyas were lit in ancient times. On the western side of the tank is a very old temple built by the Silhara kings. As per a legend, the Hindu god Rama was overcome with fatigue and thirst and asked his brother Laxman to bring water. Laxman shot an arrow into the ground and water appeared from a tributary of the Ganges.
