Near 1800 Mobile phone Towers are not Legal in Mumbai - BMC

With nearly 1,800 mobile phone towers in the metropolis being illegal, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is contemplating action against their operators, BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte has said. The BMC has also assured that it would amend its policy on mobile towers and would see to it that not more than two towers were installed on a building.

The issue of health hazards due to the radiation from mobile towers was raised recently in the general body meeting of the civic body. The councillors in the BMC suggested strict action against the illegal mobile tower operators, responsible for causing severe health risks like cancer, headache among others.

“The BMC has the right to remove illegal mobile towers,” Kunte told reportersin Mumbai. The telecom ministry has to check the radiation from mobile towers. “The equipment which are fixed in the mobile towers whether they are in the set norms…that should be checked by the telecom ministry,” he said.

“There are 3,600 mobile towers in the metropolis. 1,800 of them are illegal,” Kunte said. The BMC commissioner also said action was taken against 150 illegal mobile towers. “However, after that mobile tower operators moved the court.” The matter is sub-judice now.

Last week, the corporators had asked the BMC to eliminate health hazards and fear of radiation from mobile towers.

Controversy brewing women not being allowed at Haji Ali Mumbai

Controversy brewing over women not being allowed entry into the iconic Haji Ali shrine in Mumbai. Muslim women's groups fear this law may come into force at other shrines across India.
In a controversial move, the management of the iconic Sufi shrine Haji Ali Dargah on Tuesday banned the entry of women in the sanctum sanctorum that houses the tomb of 15th century Sufi saint Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. The Tomb is located off the Mumbai coast.
According to the reports, the trustees of the Haji Ali Dargah has restricted the entry of the women devotees citing the Sharia Laws. However, the trust has allowed women to roam freely within the dargah's compound.
"Women can offer namaaz and offer shawls and flowers. They can even roam freely within the dargah complex. But their entry into the sanctum sanctorum is strictly prohibited,” Rizwan Merchant, a trustee and noted criminal lawyer said.
He further added, “The decision was taken six months ago and at that time too it had sparked criticism but after bringing certain changes into it we have finally decided to enforce it now.”
"The Sharia law claims that no woman can visit a cemetery or a grave," said Suhail Khandwani, the trustee of the Haji Ali dargah and managing trustee of Mahim's Makhdoom Shah Baba's dargah.

"We allow women in dargah sharif but not at the astana (sanctum sanctorum where a saint is buried)" Khandwani said.

"Most of the women, almost 80 per cent of them, agree with the decision (to impose curbs)," he claimed.

(Sachin Tendulkar Awarded by Order of Australia )

Over 6 Lakh viewers face balnk TV in Mumbai 1st November

MUMBAI: Approximately six lakh viewers in Mumbai who have not yet switched to either set-top boxes or dish antennae for direct-to-home connections, will face blank television sets on Thursday. In percentage terms, while 70% Mumbaikars have opted for set-top boxes and around 26% have switched to DTH, 4%-or roughly six lakh viewers-are yet to digitalize their connections, local cable operators told TOI.

They claimed that a shortage of manpower as well as set-top boxes has hit digitalization in low-income pockets and even certain middle-income areas. Several consumers, though, said cable operators are not cooperating with them and are overcharging them for set-top boxes. Operators have denied this.
After buying signals from broadcasters, multimedia system operators (MSOs) supply these to local cable operators, which ultimately provide them to consumers through cables. "Our efforts would be to ensure that the maximum number of set-top boxes are installed. We hope to stabilize digitalization of the whole of Mumbai in the next three to four days," said Ashok Mansukhani, president of the MSOs' Alliance.

Jagdish Joshi of the Eastern Cable Operators' Welfare Association said set-top boxes are not available in certain pockets. Joshi said operators would now fight with broadcasters and MSOs to ensure better revenue benefits to operators as well as consumers.

Cable Operators Distributors' Association president Anil Parab said they have convened a meeting of all 3,000 operators in the city at Rang Sharda to decide on the agitation plan over the digitalization issue.

Technology was innovatively used in all the projects by the students. This Science Fair creatively played a key role in building up a platform where in the connection of science with society and the world around us became more evident.
